Hello, I’m Chris — the person behind DECK.
I design and install bespoke balloon décor for celebrations, events and businesses across Norwich and Norfolk.
For me, balloons are less about decoration and more about atmosphere. When used thoughtfully they can change how a space feels — signalling celebration, curiosity, and permission to enjoy the moment.
Every project begins with a conversation about the space, the occasion and the feeling you want people to experience.
Balloon décor works best when it responds to its surroundings.
Whenever possible, I begin a project by visiting the venue or carefully studying the space. Whether it's a dance floor, shop, garden or living room, I approach each location with fresh eyes.
Rather than imposing decoration onto a space, I look for ways balloons can work with existing architecture, light and movement. Sometimes this means a simple garland following the line of a staircase. Other times it might lead to something more ambitious suspended overhead.
The aim is always the same: a design that feels natural to the space and joyful for the people in it.
I also work closely with venues and organisers to ensure installations run smoothly — from planning access and timing to installation and de-rig.
In 1989, the “Funtime Disco” was the place to be — at least according to my seven-year-old self.
My sister and I transformed my bedroom into an all-afternoon disco with flashing lights, non-stop music and dancing. Our parents were charged 50p entry, served lemon squash in wine glasses, and treated to an unforgettable balloon drop.
Looking back, that may have been the beginning.
As I grew older I remained captivated by music, dancing and the history of the disco movement — particularly the loft parties of New York in the 1970s where balloons were often part of the atmosphere.
Naturally, balloons began appearing at my own parties in Norwich. My bedsit on St Gregory’s Green was only three metres square, but I pushed the furniture aside, folded the bed against the wall and covered the ceiling with balloons.
What I noticed was the effect they had on people.
Guests would arrive, see the room filled with balloons, and something shifted. Faces lifted. Shoulders relaxed. The unspoken message seemed to be:
you’re allowed to celebrate here.
Eventually the parties moved to other venues and dance floors around the city, and decorating those spaces became a quiet obsession.
After an unexpected period of ill health in 2017, I decided life was too short to ignore the things that bring joy. I trained professionally in balloon design and began building DECK — turning a long-standing passion into a creative business.
Working in an industry often seen as non-essential has made me especially mindful of environmental responsibility.
My aim is to bring moments of celebration while keeping materials and practices as thoughtful as possible.
The balloons I use are professional-grade latex made from natural rubber — a renewable material harvested from rubber trees. Unlike plastic, natural latex biodegrades over time.
All installations are air-filled rather than helium-filled. This avoids the risk of balloon releases that can harm wildlife and marine environments. Air-filled designs are also longer-lasting and more versatile for installation work.
I’m a member of the Pro Environment Balloon Alliance UK, a group working to promote responsible balloon use through education and improved industry standards.
When installations are collected after events, balloons are sent to Shred Station Ltd, where they are shredded and composted alongside other biodegradable materials. The company operates as a CarbonNeutral® certified business.
Clients and venues are encouraged to dispose of latex balloons responsibly by simply “pin it and bin it” after use.
Balloon design is ultimately about people coming together — celebrating milestones, opening new chapters, or simply creating moments of joy.
If you have an occasion in mind, I’d be delighted to hear about it.
